The Complete Moving Checklist: Before, During, and After
Moving is one of those things that always takes longer than you think — and the "after" part is usually the piece people underestimate most. Here's a straightforward walkthrough of what to handle at each stage, so nothing falls through the cracks.
6–8 Weeks Before
- Declutter room by room before you pack — donate, sell, or toss anything you're not bringing
- Request quotes from moving companies or reserve a truck
- Start a folder (physical or digital) for moving-related documents and receipts
- Use up food in the freezer and pantry
- Research your new neighborhood — schools, utilities, trash pickup days
2–3 Weeks Before
- Notify your bank, employer, subscriptions, and any accounts of your address change
- Schedule utility transfers (electric, water, internet, gas) for both homes
- File a mail forwarding request with USPS
- Start packing non-essentials — books, seasonal items, decor
- Label boxes by room, not just contents, so unloading is faster
Moving Day
- Keep a "first night" box separate — toiletries, chargers, medications, a change of clothes
- Do a final walkthrough of the old place, checking closets, cabinets, and the garage
- Take photos of both properties for your records (utility meter readings, existing damage)
- Confirm keys, garage codes, and mailbox access at the new place
The First Two Weeks
This is where most people run out of steam — the boxes are in, but the house doesn't feel done yet. Common things still on the list at this point:
Unpacking and decluttering — figuring out what actually has a home in the new place versus what's still living in boxes
Small home improvement projects — fixing anything the inspection flagged, replacing fixtures, that kind of thing
Painting — a fresh coat before furniture is fully settled is a lot easier than working around it later
Hanging TVs, shelves, and mirrors — mounting takes the right tools and stud placement, which is why it's often the thing that gets put off the longest
None of this has to happen all at once, and there's no rule that says you have to do it yourself. If any of it's on your list and you'd rather hand it off, that's exactly what we help with → — no pressure, just an option.
